I learned a new lesson today as I sat down to write my blog. I realized, I once again did not find time in my day to work on my book. Then I realized something – I found time to sit down and write my blog, didn’t I? Then I most certainly have the time to work on my book!
This tells me two things, one of which I already knew about myself. I am a procrastinator, of the worst sort. I have the idea for my book, and what I am writing next all in my head, and yet I just have to jot it down. That is the first thing – the one I knew. The second thing, the one I’ve learned today is that I need to start scheduling time within my day to concentrate solely on my book, as I would if I was heading to work. That is the overall goal after all, to be an author, in my own right. If I want such a thing to happen I am going to have to work hard and dedicate myself to my work. It’s time to start treating it like a real job.
This means that tonight, when I finish my blog, there is no time to relax just yet, it’s time to go to work! I vowed to get a chapter or two finished prior to classes starting next semester and time is running out!
Now I know that part of my procrastination comes from the fact that I know I can knock out several pages of writing in one sitting and basically “git-r-done” as they say, with time to spare. It sure would be better for me if I put the pressure on now though vs. the last few days before class starts.
So what have I been up to with my blog that’s kept me so occupied to pull me away from writing my book?
Two things really. The first I discussed with you yesterday, the massive increase in blog views I’ve had since learning about the value of Stumbleupon. The second thing that has kept me occupied was the addition of a store to my blog (I added it to the About Me/Contact page). I spent some time today creating a logo for my blog. It is still a work in progress, although for the moment I am happy with it. You’ve probably noticed it just about my blogs title. I used this logo and an image I took of my paints and paintbrushes to create a few t-shirts, coffee mugs, magnets, among other items to monetize my blog.
I didn’t do this lightly. It took some thought before I decided to opt for this being on my blog, however, the fees for owning and maintaining a blog do add up, and as a college student they can get expensive. So these items are my gift to you for helping me maintain my blog.
Take care everyone and feel free to contact me if you have any questions!
